Colleton County High School is the result of the 2002 merger of Walterboro High School and Ruffin High School.

Nicknamed the Bulldogs, Walterboro High School was a football powerhouse, appearing in the 1995 4A state title game and winning the state 4A title in 1997.

  • 1975--Second round of the state playoffs
  • 1979--Second round of the state playoffs
  • 1983--Lower State Champions (lost to Laurens 16-0)
  • 1989--Third round of the state playoffs
  • 1990--Region Champs; Second round of the state playoffs (12-1 record)
  • 1991--Third round of the state playoffs
  • 1995--Lower State Champions (lost to Union 31-16)
  • 1997--STATE CHAMPIONS (12-3 record)
  • 1998--Third round of the state playoffs
  • 1999--Second round of the state playoffs
  • 2001--Region Champs; Second Round of the playoffs*

*Last away win for the Bulldogs was at Summerville. The last win ever for the Bulldogs came against the team of "Radio," T.L. Hanna.


Colleton County began Big 16 competition in 2002. The season concluded with a 9-4 record. The Cougars first win ever was at Wando (16-12). The first home win was against West Ashley (29-28).

The Cougars were Region 8 runner-ups to Summerville. They defeated Ridgeview in the first round of the playoffs. The season ended with a 28-7 loss at Rock Hill. (The score was 14-7 with three minutes remaining. Rock Hill intercepted the ball to score the final 14 points. CCHS was the only team to score against Rock Hill in the state playoffs.)

The Cougars finished 5-7 in 2003. Although a disappointing year overall, the Cougars played well in victories over Fort Dorchester, Battery Creek, and James Island. The Cougars lost in the first round of the Big 16 Playoffs 28-0 to Dorman in Spartanburg.

The Cougars finished 3-8 in 2004. 

Leroy Riley, the Cougar's head coach, has a record of 140-89.

Players under Riley who have gone on to college and NFL fame include Kenyatta Spruill, James Walker, Antione Nesmith, Yusef Kelly, Darwin Walker, and Norman Hand.
